Teeth and Gums 101: Tooth Brushing for Kids

Are you actively making sure your child’s teeth are cleaned every day? Just as with oral hygiene habits with adults, young children need to have their teeth brush and cared for daily.

One of the most important tasks you can undertake for your child’s oral health is to brush their teeth twice daily. Although this job only takes a few minutes a day, it is often crucial for the health of a person’s teeth. For children under three years of age, use a rice-sized dab of toothpaste. For children three to six years of age, use a pea-sized dab of toothpaste.

Never allow your brushing utensils or any other dental tools to be shared with your child. Doing so can infect their mouths with new bacteria, which increases their risk for tooth failure and decay. As an alternative, wash and disinfect all items thoroughly after each use if you must use them for both you and your children. When brushing your child’s teeth, never press too firm or for too long, but rather use a gentle touch to make sure that all areas and sides of their teeth are reached safely and efficiently.
