Dental Fluorosis: The Facts

What do you know about fluoride? Did you know that it is often added to water to fight off cavities? While fluoride is generally considered useful, would you be surprised to hear that consuming too much fluoride can lead to an issue known as fluorosis?

Fortunately, fluorosis isn’t a serious issue, but it can be quite embarrassing because fluorosis can cause white or brown spots or unusual lines on one’s smile. Since children are exposed to fluoride when they drink water, you should monitor the amount of toothpaste they have on their brush. You should also remember to give your child fluoride-free toothpaste until they’re able to spit it out on their own.

You should also know that fluorosis can only affect your children’s teeth while they’re forming. In other words, adults don’t have to worry about this disease. If you’re worried that you or your child is dealing with fluorosis, we recommend scheduling an appointment with our team. We’ll be happy to examine your child’s smile and to help you improve the appearance of your smile.
