Discomfort from Teething & How to Alleviate It

jeff.gosling@cdp.dentalUncategorized

Your baby has 20 primary teeth, also called “baby teeth,” under their gum line. These teeth usually start to break through the gums between 6 and 12 months. The teething process is uncomfortable, so your baby may be irritable during the day and have a hard time sleeping at night. Our pediatric dentist is happy to give tips about teething in Crockett, Texas.

Teething Symptoms
Because teething is uncomfortable, babies often cry or fuss in the days or weeks before each tooth breaks through. Other teething symptoms include:

– Drooling
– Swollen gums
– Temperature that is slightly higher than normal
– Trouble sleeping
– Loss of appetite

Please call your pediatrician of your child has one or more of the following symptoms while teething.

– Fever
– Diarrhea
– Rash

Soothing Your Teething Baby
To soothe your child’s tender, sore gums, gently rub their gums. You can use a clean finger, a cool spoon, or a moist gauze pad. A teething ring or a pacifier can also help. Avoid teething rings that have liquid inside that could break open. If your child is having a particularly hard time with the teething process, ask your pediatrician about giving your baby Tyenol occasionally for the pain.
